In Orwell's
Nineteen Eighty-Four, read and annotate to pp. 183-230. From pages 188 to 204, the reading can feel slow as it explains many aspects of Oceania's society. I think it's worthwhile to read it carefully, since this section answers many of your questions about life under the Party. Nevertheless, if you find pages 188 to 204 unbearably slow, you may skim them (notice, I wrote "skim," not "skip") and resume reading carefully at page 204.
